May 20th ,Washington—NASA reported that it is renaming a significant space telescope under
development after an astronomer who drove the office’s initial work in space-based astronomy,
even as the mission stays under danger of cancellation.
The organization declared that the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will now be
known as the Nancy Elegance Roman Space Telescope after Roman, who died in 2018, joined
NASA in 1959 as the first head of astronomy, worked for the agency for more than 20 years.
The Roman Space Telescope, however, has an unsure future.
